What is Google Alerts?

According to Wikipedia,” Google Alerts is a content change detection and notification service, offered by the search engine company Google. The service sends emails to the user when it finds new results—such as web pages, newspaper articles, blogs, or scientific research—that match the user’s search term(s).”

In short, you set instructions for a particular product, service or a niche, by then Google sends you a notification whenever anyone makes a mention on the internet.

You might know that everyday 4+million people search Google, and a ton of new content is published on Google.  Now it’s really a tough job to find each and every possible news about your niche or product.

But Google Alerts makes bloggers life easy by setting an alert on Google.  When you set an alert, Google notifies you by sending an email.  So every update about any product, that you set as a Google alerts go directly into your email box.  How cool is that?

Importance of setting Google Alerts!

Google scraps the net and gives you a ton of ideas about product reviews, keywords and everything that is published on the internet about your query.

suppose you want to get details about your niche, say affiliate marketing, you can just put the keyword in the google alerts, and you will get all the notifications about the affiliate marketing.

If you want to search more deeply or thoroughly you can type every keyword, about which you want to get informed.

  • affiliate marketing + programs
  • + course
  • + books, blogs, business, benefits, beginners, commission, etc.

You can go for any number of keywords and set Google alerts which interests you.  Once you set your Google alerts, Google continues to send you mail notification whenever these trigger tricks.

So you see by getting these notifications daily in your inbox, and studying, you get knowledge and in-depth understanding of the subject.

It helps you to establish yourself as an authority when most of the times you try to help you out with your knowledge.

People generally believe you and you become their go-to person.  If you become their go to person,  you have achieved their confidence.

Disadvantages of Google Alerts

Not Accurate:

It is a very common complaint against Goole Alerts that it is not as accurate as it needs to be.  It is very possible that you set an alert, and you will get the notification, not as close to the alert you set to.

Sometimes you also get an alert notification which of no use to, and not related to your set alert!

Not as Google Analytics

Of course, it is not as sharp and to the point like Google analytics.  But we should remember it is not meant to be a data analysis tool, it is just a simple reminder.  It just meant to remind you when anyone

publishes content dealing with your alert.

 You can not import them.

It’s a drawback of Google Alerts, that you can not import or download them.  You can set 10 alerts, but if you want to download it, there is no system where you can automatically save it to your device.  You need to manually download a single alert if you need to be!

Conclusion:

Google Alerts can be a great tool to make you give information about your brand, product or any particular event.

You get a daily notification about the event you set.  Of course, it is no accurate as Google Analytics, and you can not use this information for a statistical purpose, but you can latest and up to date information out the event.

Google Alerts can be very helpful if you set them correctly, it gives the information ready in your inbox.  for new business owners, solopreneurs its really helpful as it gives the basic and needed information to them

I daily use Google Alerts, it helps me immensely.  Not only I get notifications, but I also get tons of ideas to blog about.

with every notification ofGoogle Alerts, you can create your content, if you try to.  Google Alerts are always handy to find out about the niche and my audience.

How is your experience about Google Alert, have they been useful to you?  Pl, let me know in the comments below.

  2. Dear Shubhaangi,

Thank you very much for reminding me about Google Alerts. Six months back I had tested that but get bored with their daily notifications. This was because most of the notifications are not worthy. At that time I was not a member of WA. That was the time, I used to write blogs on Blogger.

But now as a member of WA & having published my niche-website, after reading your post, I realized that this tool definitely can help me to, at least, find subjects I can write on. Yes, I am going to give a try. Also, I am going to share this post with all my friends.

Thanks again for your post on this subject.

  3. Many bloggers and websites owners is unaware of Google alert and its benefits. Google Alerts is one of the easiest tools that marketers can use. And because it’s so important to be aware of what people are saying about your business online, there’s no good reason not to use Google Alerts. Google Alert is a highly useful tool but few marketers use it to its fullest potential.
