What Is Ebates All About?
Ebates is a cashback website, founded in 1998, it was founded by two deputy district attornies. In 2014, Rakuten acquired Ebates for $1 Billion. In 2019, Ebates was renamed as Rakuten Rewards.
Ebates offers you cashback on what you already doing, yes, shop online. In short, you get cash back on every purchase you made through the Ebate site.
How Ebate/Rakuten Really Works?
Ebate has partnered with hundreds of companies like Amazon, Walmart, Best buy and so on.
Once you sign in with Rakuten, you will see the search bar on the homepage. Now you can search for “Amazon”, “eBay” or any other shop you want. You will see all the offers regarding that website. Now go ahead, and shop as you always do.
When you make a purchase, you will get a certain percentage as cashback which will directly go into your Rakuten account.
You can also install Ebate’s browser so that every time you visit a website, you will get notified of any discount. You can either dismiss the notification or click a button to activate the cashback. Be sure to activate the Cashback button before making any purchase.
Cashback at Physical Stores:
Rakuten not only offers cashback at online stores but also at physical stores as well. You just need to link your credit or debit card.
Ebates Visa Card:
Ebates also has a visa card, use it wherever it is accepted and get cashback. Though the amount is small it’s better than nothing.
So what’s the catch?
Rakuten has partnered with all these companies, and they give a certain percentage when someone buys through Rakuten’s link. It’s called affiliate marketing.
Suppose Rakuten gets 40% from Walmart when someone buys through its link, Rakuten offers you 20% as a discount. so here is a win-win situation, Rakuten gets a commission, you get cashback and Walmart gets a sale.

If you search the Internet and various forums, you will find that the majority of them give positive feedback about Rakuten.
But if you read some of the complaints, it can’t be ignored.
I read this complaint from many Rakuten users who are using the platform for a long time, which means they are loyal customers of Rakuten.
Instead of giving them good treatment, Rakuten has blamed them for abusing their system, which is very funny. The more serious thing Rakutne actually closed their account and even not bothered to offer them their valid affiliate earnings.
You will hear the same complaint from this member. It seems Rakuten grants affiliate commission of $25 per referral when they purchase anything worth $25. At the same time, your referral gets $10 discount on their purchase.
But it seems Rakuten is not giving its affiliates its due commission. It’s very surprising from one of the biggest affiliate sites like Rakuten which itself promotes affiliate marketing, treats its affiliates so badly. the worst thing it blames its affiliates of doing fraud with them.

Is Ebates/Rakuten A Scam?
Rakuten is not a SCAM, as there are many positive reviews about Rakuten and people are getting paid regularly.
But I would not recommend Rakuten to my readers, for obvious reasons we discussed above. It’s very strange that Rakuten did not treat its affiliates in a proper way.
Many has complained about Rakuten not giving affiliate commission, once you start getting regular referrals.
